This months Food Exchange theme was “small bakes”. Greta from the brilliant blog Made by Greta challenged me to make Amerikaner cakes.
I have seen Amerikaner’s in lots of bakeries here in Germany and these are something we use to make at work. I didn’t get the chance to bake them, but I was responsible for decorating them!
Having seen so many of these about, I was very excited to get the chance to make them and try them for the first time!
They are very quick to make but are quite an unusual cake mixture, as they contain buttermilk and cream cheese! It may sound a bit strange but resulted in a really light and moist cake.
Greta actually wrote a post about these a while ago, so if you would like the recipe you can find it on her blog here.
They are then decorated with a glaze made by mixing icing sugar and a bit of water together or chocolate. I decided to decorate them the way I was taught at work.
These are such delicious little cake and I had them in the oven within 10/15 minutes, so they are definitely quick to make!
If you would like to see my April challenge for Greta head over to her blog here!
If you have any suggestions on what Greta and I can bake next month we would love to hear your ideas!

A new Food Exchange challenge is posted on the first Thursday of every month!
They look soooo good! I am sitting here, trying not to go to the kitchen and search for sweets and so would love to have one (or two, or three) of these!
