I love trying recipes from other countries. It is one of the reasons I love doing The Food Exchange with Greta from Made by Greta so much.
I have seen pictures of Semlor buns on my Instagram feed for quite a while and always thought they looked delicious. I found a recipe online and decided to give them ago. I also wanted something else to make as Tim doesn’t like cream or marzipan… so I found a recipe for Fastelavnsboller on the same website.
Semlor buns are eaten during Lent in Scandinavia. They are an enriched bread roll, which once baked and cooled, the middle is hollowed out and filled with a marzipan mixture. Finally they are topped with whipped cream with a little vanilla mixed in. Then the top of the roll is put on the top.
Fastelavnsboller buns are from Denmark and are great if you don’t like marzipan or cream (Tim!!). They are also an enriched bread roll (I used the same dough that I used for the Semlor buns). It is then filled with a pastry cream and topped with chocolate icing and sprinkles!
If you would like to have a go at making these you can find the recipes I used here and here.
