I have been living in Germany for 10 months now so I thought it would be a good opportunity to write about changing my diet since I have moved here. The biggest hurdle for me has been that a traditional German is quite meat heavy. I have never eaten a huge amount of meat, normally only two or three times a week. The other adaptation for me has been eating a lot less fish. As I grew up in Norfolk we lived very close to the coast and I ate quite a lot of fish. In Germany there is very little fresh fish available and the fish you can find tends to be very expensive!

Here are some of the things I have found while living in Germany which I love:

Bretzel (Pretzel)… these have become a slight addiction of mine! In Germany a lot of people seem to eat them with butter, but personally I don’t think they need it. A good Bretzel should be chewy and salty.

Flammkuchen… in France this is known as a Tarte flambée and in English means flame cake. The best way I can describe a Flammkuchen is a very thin pizza. Traditionally it is covered in creme fraiche, sliced onion and lardon pieces. There are several other variations which can include mushrooms and cheese. There are also sweet versions available too! If you are coming to Germany I highly recommend you try one of these! If you aren’t coming to Germany any time soon but would still like to try it you can find a recipe here from Made by Greta.

Currywurst… most people have probably heard of this one! This is a sliced Bratwurst covered in a sauce, which is normally tomato ketchup mixed with curry powder. It is very simple but really tasty!

Bread and Cake… there is very little pre-sliced, pre-packed bread in the supermarket here compared to England. Most people buy fresh bread daily from the Bakery and every supermarket has their own Bakery. This is something we now do every day. The cake here is also incredible and cheap! Most places bake their own cake so it is really fresh too!

Rosinenschnecke… in English this means a raisin snail! It is a sweet bread scroll filled with raisins and occasionally apricot jam, then covered in a sugar glaze. Very sweet but very delicious! There is also a nut version which I think is equally as nice!

I hope you have enjoyed this slightly different post! I am having a week without sweet food this week. As much as I love sweet food, I do feel it is important to take a break from it for a while! So I am not able to do any recipe testing this week. Hopefully next weeks will make up for it though!
