Wednesday 30th September (The Food Exchange – September)

It is that time of the month again when Greta and I challenge each other to bake a traditional German or English recipe!

For those of you who are new to the Food Exchange. Greta (you can check out her wonderful blog here!) and I met through blogging and soon realised we had something in common. Greta is German and is living in England and I am English living in Germany. We thought it would be nice to get to know our new countries a little better through baking! Each month we have a theme and we give each other a recipe from our home country.

This is now our third post! So far I have made Apfeltaschen and Biskuitrolle. While Greta has made Jam Tarts and Eton Mess.

This months theme was apples! They are absolutely everywhere here in Germany so it was really nice to bake with them!

Greta’s challenge for me was  Apfelkuchen (Apple cake). It is a shortcrust pastry case filled with cooked apples and a cream based mixture.

It is a really tasty cake and surprising light. It also isn’t too sweet which is quite nice! However I do think I over cooked the apples, as the picture Greta sent me looked much better than my attempt!

I don’t make pastry that often either so it was nice to be able to do it again. There is something I find about making pastry quite relaxing! The pastry also had the zest of a lemon in which complimented the apple filling nicely! The filling was quite like a set custard which again is something I would not normally make so it was a nice change.

The only thing I would potentially do differently next time is to add a bit of cinnamon or even just dust some over the top. The only reason for this is because apple and cinnamon is one of my favourite flavour combinations!

If you would like to see my challenge for Greta, pop over to her blog here.

I am so sorry I have been quiet recently! I hope to start blogging properly again soon!

In the meantime if you have any suggestions for topics or bakes for the coming months please let me or Greta know!
